What do you call a chief of police for a small department who hires his personal friend, a retired 25 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, already drawing his pension, for a full time position at top out pay to a department that is only 23% funded in their pension, when the current police candidate list is still active? CORRUPTION.
What do you call a department who hires an officer over the cut off age of state hire (avoided by technicality) who has a close, intimate and alleged sexual relationship with a command officer, who turns the other cheek on every disciplinary act, when other officer candidates have tested and been passed over as well as other officers had received discipline for similar actions? CORRUPTION.
These two out of a disturbing amount of issues within a single police department, are the very core base to police corruption 101.
POWER + ABUSE = CORRUPTION
Manipulation of overtime offering, schedule changes for department needs, officers allowed to avoid working weekends, being assigned the brand new SUV squad and then removed from it because your DUI numbers have dropped… all, petty yet effective abuse of power by command staff, meant to exert passive aggressive punishment onto officers as command sees fit.
The most frustrating issue is the lack of solution to manage these issues or prevent future ones. Being a very vocal opponent of police corruption, I have had first hand experience of bringing issues to command, the chief and the mayor, with no issue being resolved sans the target against me leading to termination.
I want to post a single, short email from an officer that I received. One of MANY who are frustrated and irritated and the double standard and lack of ethic that command staff has no shame over. I keep getting private emails, from police officers across the country, telling me about their experience with command staff corruption. The public needs to understand the stress of having your reports “kicked back” to you or being sent to midnight shift or being assigned the beater car in the fleet.
The public needs to know about the physical and emotional turmoil this causes officers, to the point of destruction in their heath, relationship and ability to properly serve you in our fullest capacity.
Starting today, in addition to the many projects that I have been involved in, I am committed to the solution of police command corruption as by individual cases, brought forth by officer claims, upon investigation, with the help of the communities. Together, it is my hopes that we can ensure that police officers return to the highest standards of allowed and expected excellence, without their own leadership getting in the way of success, due to unethical and immoral behavior.
MUCH more to come on this topic.
“Izzo I’ve watched most of your videos and followed your story. I’m from a small dept in XXXXX about 3 1/2 hours from your area. I’m currently sitting in my squad car confused, disappointed, and half sick to my stomach. My dept had a meeting Monday where the Cheif rolled back some issues that the Sgt had started.
The Sgt had crafted shifts and days off to only benefit him and convinced the union to back him when he did it. Following the meeting during the week the Cheif elected to have meetings with the officers privately.
Tonight I had a meeting with the Cheif where I explained my concerns with the dept and how the Sgt does things. The Cheif seemed very receptive and agreed on most things and asked about a vote of confidence on the Sgt. About 30 mins after the meeting we get a department wide text stating we will be having a 6 am meeting in the morning to call if issues. I asked what the issue was and how long I would have to hold over. I was told I didn’t like the stories I was told they are somewhat different and people will be wrote up and suspended.
Very frustrating. I know you delt with worse and hear worse stories. Just wanting to vent to someone who knows the struggle.”
This email, although very innocent in nature to the general public, made my blood boil tonight.
My call to action has been sharply focused… Serving the warriors who serve us. I will advocate and protect our police.
